Turkish President Recap Tayyip Erdogan sounded politically correct when he said that Ankara’s intentions to remain in Syria are straight- “unless all other countries pull their support from Syria, we are not leaving.”
His other reason for justification is that “we will not let up until every last terrorist leaves the region.” Erdogan is referring to the YPG, the main component of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) who Ankara has viewed as a terrorist organization since the beginning of its inception in 2014.
Erdogan has also indicated that their military offensive will continue as long as they feel they need to guard their vulnerable borders.
Erdogan has stressed the presence of the US, Russia, and Iran while saying that “neither of these nations shares borders with Syria.”
It is worth noting that earlier last month Turkey had sort help from Russia to push back Kurdish led forces, in the order, it could establish the safe zone.
On the question of whether Operation Peace Spring will continue, Erdogan said to media at large “we are in favor of Syria’s unity and solidarity. We wouldn’t want it to be disintegrated.” He was on his way back from an official trip to Hungary.
Erdoğan has further stressed that the YPG has not left the regions in northern Syria covered by separate deals made with the U.S. and Russia.
With the YPG members still in the region, Turkey feels its borders are compromised.
However, the flipside of this is that Kurdish forces continue to man the borders in order the pushed back ISIS groups and their proxies may not find a loophole to come back to the Northern parts of Syria.
America, on its part, is already divided over the 1000 or more troops that have been sent to ‘look after’ oil reserves in this part of Syria. Russia is also making sure it doesn’t retreat from the oil-rich war-torn land of Syria.
Turkey is at the strongest point right now. However, Erdogan’s tone shows irritability over both Washington and Moscow handing over empty promises
