While the US has made a clean sweep by eliminating the ISIS leader Baghdadi, Turkey is now making its presence felt, as it claims to have captured one of Baghdadi’s wife, his sister, and brother in law.
Ankara has given an official statement that they plan to extract any information possible towards the future actions of the militant group.
Known as Daesh in Arabic, the ISIS group was led by Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, who became a self-proclaimed crusader and established his own caliphate.
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) became a powerful terrorist group. It went onto become an unrecognized proto-state that has followed a fundamentalist, Salafi jihadist doctrine of Sunni Islam.
The Kurdish forces, once backed by the US, were instrumental in keeping the ISIS at bay and had pushed them back into Iraq, a water-tight gate that fell off, with the sudden retreat of the US support earlier last month.
The US, on its part, has said, that the elimination of Baghdadi was a systematic move, which was made, on the intel they received through Kurdish patrons in the eastern Syrian region.
US has not been explicit about the crucial role played by Kurdish intel but had given Turkey warning enough to claim to fame, Baghdadi’s elimination.
Declaring in a speech at the Ankara University, the President of Turkey, Recap Erdogan has ridiculed the way the United States has publicized that “Baghdadi killed himself in a tunnel. They started a communication campaign about this.”
“But, I am announcing it here for the first time: We captured his wife and didn’t make a fuss like them. Similarly, we also captured his sister and brother in law in Syria.” He shared no more details.
Syria and the world can now witness the various childish political maneuvers of Turkey and the US with some bit of strong play of leadership exhibited by Vladimir Putin.
Political analysts are wary of the future of the ISIS and have warned the vulnerability the world now faces to their next attack.
In rather simple words, Joe Biden has already worded the US’s action of sending back troops to Eastern Syria as a green signal to ISIS to ‘regroup, recruit and reassemble quickly’.
While Mike Pompeo had declared that Baghdadi’s other two wives had been killed at the raid itself, Turkey’s move may just make it feel a part of the world power’s participation in curbing terrorism.
The act itself, may not yield any important intel at all.
