Somalia Wants Qatar to Mediate with Al Shabaab

The President of Somalia Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has made a proposal to the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The President of Somalia wants the Qatari government to be the sponsor of a truce between the government of Somalia and Al Shabaab. Al Shabaab is a known terrorist group. The Somalian president also wants the lead for the negotiations to be Fahd Yassin who is the head of the Somali intelligence agency.

Additionally, the government of Qatar has provided the funding for the government of Somalia to start operations in the regions that border Kenya. It will also be paying for the lawyers involved in the latest border dispute between Kenya and Somalia.


Qatar has decided to support the state budget of Somalia in 2019 with 73 million Qatari riyals which is equivalent to US$20.05 million. Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani recently welcomed the President of Somalia at the royal palace in Qatar. They discussed ways for improving bilateral ties in different fields. The two leaders also reviewed the developments in Somalia along with other issues that are of mutual interest.

This is the third visit of the Somalian President since assuming the presidency.
