The Islamic militant group Al-Shabaab has taken responsibility regarding the twin attack on a European military convoy and the US airbase. The US military detailed no injuries and told it did two counter-airstrikes.
On Monday, Reuter’s columnist saw a damaged armored vehicle carrying a small Italian flag sticker in the capital, Mogadishu. It’s not clear whether there were any casualties.
In the early Monday morning, soldiers from Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen Martyrdom Brigade propelled a challenging strike on the US army base,” a press release by the militant group stated. “After attacking the US base, the group stormed the military area, drawing in the militants in an extreme firefight.” According to the Guardian.
It struck the entry gate of a US military airstrip in the Baledogle Airfield, around 100 km (60 miles) west of the capital Mogadishu, the authorities confirmed.
The Second attack, as per the security official included a car bomb, which hit an Italian peacekeeping convoy in Mogadishu. The Reuters reported.
A car bomb targeted the EU military advisers near the industrial road. A vehicle stacked with explosives was slammed on to one of the convoys which caused casualties,” stated Omar Abikar, a Somali security official.
Emanuela Del Re vice-minister of foreign affairs of Italy tweeted that Italian soldiers were targeted in the assault. “Extremely stressed for the blast at the entry of Italian officers EUTM in Somalia,” she stated, pointing towards the EU’s training mission in Somalia.
The site Intelligence, which monitors militant activities around the world, said Al-Shabaab had taken the responsibility of the two attacks. They are the most recent line of shelling and assaults asserted by the group.
