On Sunday, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued a strong statement, commenting the announce of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi about his international legitimacy to intervene in Libya to defend Egypt’s national security. The security of Egypt and Saudi Arabia is “indivisible”, Saudi Minister of State for African Affairs Ambassador Ahmed Kattan said in a tweet, stressing that al-Sisi statement on Libya reflects the strength and resilience of the Saudi-Egyptian relations.
“Indeed, Egypt’s security is an integral part of the Kingdom’s security, and the Kingdom’s security is an integral part of Egypt’s security,” Kattan stated. In the last 2 weeks diplomatic tensions and military movements are escalating in the North-African countries, between the foreign backers of the Libyan warring parties, the self-stilled Libyan National Army (LNA), led by General Khalifa Haftar and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), represented by Fayez al-Serraj.
Turkey, which sustain the GNA, has also been ramping up its military intervention in Libya recently. Turkish presidency accused Arab countries and France to fuel the conflict, while refusing any proposal for a truce. On Saturday, al-Sisi affirmed that his country has a legitimate right to intervene in Libya and ordered the army to be prepared to carry out missions if necessary. “Any direct intervention from the Egyptian state has now acquired international legitimacy,” Egyptian president affirmed, adding that Cairo had received “direct threats” from “terrorist militias and mercenaries” supported by foreign countries.
Turkey said to understand the Egyptian concern for its national security, reaffirming that Turkish troops will stay in Libya until the Government of National Accord wants them to stay. Previously, Egypt had called for a ceasefire in Libya, Sisi added that Egypt has always been reluctant to intervene in Libya but “the situation now is different.” He warned Turkey and its allies that Sirte and Jufra are now a red line for Cairo that nobody can even think to cross.
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement in support of Egypt and affirmed is solidarity with Sisi in all the measures it takes to safeguard its national security. The Riyadh ministry also added: “The Kingdom stands with Egypt in its right to defend its borders and people from extremism and terrorist militias and their supporters in the region.”
Saudi Arabia called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and respond to the calls and initiative of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to reach a comprehensive solution that confirms the safety and security of Libyan territory, by restoring State’s institutions and eliminating extremist militias, and also putting an end to illegal foreign interventions that fuel terrorism in the entire region.
