According to a report published by the Australia-based Institute for Economic and Peace, it has been disclosed that Nigeria is Africa’s most oppressing country. Nigeria has secured for itself a third place in the Global Terrorism Index 2018 list. In fact, Africa’s most crowded countries were ranked after Iraq and Afghanistan.
Following Nigeria was Syria and Pakistan. Among the different countries within the list Somalia suffered the maximum impact of terrorism. India, Yemen, Egypt and Philippines secured the seventh to tenth spot respectively.
Nigeria-based terrorist group, Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab in Somalia were also featured within the list of the top four deadliest groups.
As per the report, Nigeria which tops the list of Africa’s most terrorized nations has witnessed around 1532 deaths from terrorism in 2017. There has been a 16% decrease from previous year. Terrorist activity in Nigeria has been carried out mostly by Boko Haram and Fulani extremist. The deadliest group is the Boko Haram.
In comparison, Somalia reported a sharp increase in terrorism in 2017. Deaths from terrorism increased by 93%; thereby, witnessing a sharp increase from 762 in 2016 to 1470 in 2017. In Somalia, terrorist activity is mostly dominated by Al-Shabaab. The other terrorist group who also operates in Somalia is Jabha East Africa. This group was responsible for causing 25 deaths in 2017.
