Pompeo Stated That Release of American Pastor by Turkish Court Is Significant for Turkey

On 10th October, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared that the release of US evangelical Pastor Andrew Brunson by a Turkish court during the next hearing would be a crucial step for Turkey.
The next hearing is slated to be held on 12th October. He added that if Turkey decides to release the pastor, it would be right, ethical, and moral one.
Mr. Pompeo stated that this action would be a humanitarian thing from the end of Turkey. Mr. Pompeo communicated this message during the annual Jewish Institute for National Security of America
dinner in Washington. He even added that he is optimistic that the pastor and his wife would be able to return to the United States very soon.
Mr. Pompeo disclosed that the release of the pastor would mark an important step in the relationship between the US-Turkey.
The case of Brunson became a dissenting issue during a time when dispute between Ankara and Washington has started to worsen. In fact, the worsening situation has lead to the implementation of US sanctions and tariffs against Turkey.
Brunson has been charged of having connection with Kurdish militants and also the supporters of Fethullah Gulen. The cleric has been accused of a failed coup attempt in Turkey in 2016. However,
Brunson refused to accept the allegation and Washington ordering the immediate release of Brunson.
Since 2016, after serving few months in jail, Brunson is under house arrest. If he is found guilty, he can face 35 years of jail.
Regardless of pressure from the Trump administration, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has maintained that he has no influence over the judiciary and courts would decide the fate of Brunson. Lately, the main prosecutor of Brunson’s trial got replaced and Brunson’s lawyer considers it as a sign of changing political attitude.
