The government of President Bashir Assad in Syria had been accused of making use of chlorine as a chemical weapon in an attack in May to get a stronghold in Idlib province while battling it out with insurgents.
This was communicated by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as the mouthpiece of the United States at one of the sessions at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In a responsive effort, Trump administration has admitted to having bombed Syria over Assad’s suspected use of chemical weapons, in April 2017and April 2018.
The attacks from both sides have been criticized by the world fraternity as Idlib province is highly populated by civilians and every other attack has lead to loss of lives. Assad said that his launch was an offensive at the end of April this year on Idlib and parts of adjacent provinces as insurgents had broken a truce.
As a successor of this allegation, the Unites States has picked a firm that was supplying jet fuel to Russian forces in Syria and sanctioned that company and its subsidiaries. It has frozen assets of these related firms in America as well. The US Treasury Department has sanctioned Maritime Assistance LLC, was operating as a front company for OJSC Sovfracht. It has also pasted the tag of blocked property’ on five ships of previously sanctioned Russian firm Transpetrochart, which Washington alleges provides support to Sovfracht.
The United States accuses Sovfracht of being behind a sanctions-evasion conspiracy to make payments and facilitate the transfer of supplies of jet fuel to Russian forces operating in Syria in support of the government of President Bashar Assad. Russia will continue to get it back from the United States, and possibly other EU countries for its support of the Syrian war for the last eight years.
