After a suspected warning sign given to US diplomats by Houthi spokesperson last week, after their decision to seize attack on the Kingdom, both countries have been beefing up their security net for a further attack from Iran.
To show its serious commitment to its largest buyer of defense systems and military equipment, Pentagon in the United States is sending 200 troops, a surface-to-air missile system, and extra radar equipment to Saudi Arabia.
Apparently, this quick action has come after a certain request came in from Riyadh and UAE to Washington, confirmed General Joe Dunford, chairman of the joint chiefs, and Mark Esper, defense secretary.
Further, Esper is known to have approved additional weapons to be made available for fast deployment to Saudi Arabia, confirmed Jonathan Hoffman, the Pentagon spokesman. These include a further two Patriot surface-to-air missile systems and an anti-ballistic missile defense system.
The additional troops will not make for a 700 strong army of defense personnel, with 500 having been sent in July to the Kingdom, to ‘deter’ Iran’s aggression, as communicated by Trump administration. Continuing with the strategy of ‘maximum pressure’ US has further stopped issuing visas to Iranian citizens and has now put a barred them from entering the United States. Hassan Rouhani, speaking at the UN General Assembly has termed Trump’s moves as “merciless economic terrorism”. But Trump’s stand remains to continue to push in retaliation through economic ways on Tehran if the latter wants to show muscle power anywhere in the world.
