The director of the Mossad intelligence agency held talks with a series of senior Qatari officials in an attempt to persuade Doha to continue making monthly cash transfers to Gaza, the Israeli public broadcaster Kan reported on Tuesday. The request arrives in response of the escalation in backdrop of incendiary balloon attacks in Gaza and Israel territories.
According to “The times of Israel”, with Israel’s approval, Qatar since 2018 has periodically provided millions of dollars in cash to Gaza’s Hamas rulers to pay for fuel for the Strip’s power plant, allow the group to pay its civil servants and provide aid to tens of thousands of impoverished families. Israel has reportedly done so in exchange for Hamas ensuring calm in the south and as part of efforts to reach a long-term ceasefire with the terror group, the Israeli newspaper reported.
Since Hamas assumed control in Gaza in 2007, Qatar has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the territory and backed Hamas diplomatically, sheltering its exiled leader Khaled Mashaal. In 2012, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani became the first head of state to visit Gaza under Hamas rule, pledging to raise $400 million toward reconstruction.
The Qatari regime has relationship with Israel on the one hand and with the most extreme terrorist groups, such as ISIS, al-Qaeda and Hamas, on the other hand. Several reports also revealed the Mossad’s use of Qatar to calm Hamas by financing it.
After battling terrorist financing methods for years, closing dozens of humanitarian organizations associated with the al-Thani family, the current Israeli policy of trying to reach an agreement with Hamas, via a cash flow agreed by Qatar, transforms all of this. Dr.Udi Levi, an expert on global finances and foreign policy and a research fellow at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, affirms that the new position of Israel contradicts the efforts of the economic campaign against Hamas and other terrorist organizations.
Mossad is facilitating payments to Hamas as part of the effort to prevent attacks on Israel and maintain peace on the Gaza border.Levi also highlights that the Qataris ascribe high importance to obtaining legitimacy from Israel, and from global Jewish organizations, as part of their two-faced policy.
Since the election of President Donald Trump, the Qataris have devoted immense efforts in developing ties to Jewish organizations based in the United States with the intent of turning them into lobbyists for Doha in corridors of the White House.
