The French President Emmanuel Macron mounted a strong attempt on Tuesday to mediate a meeting between President Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Since more than a month, Macron has been trying to persuade both the nations into negotiations, but both seem to be adamant on their stance. However, once again Macron’s efforts fused, when the Iranian side demanded that they will have talks only when the US will ease sanctions, Iranian official stated. The Wall Street Journal reported.
Since his landing at the United Nations General Assembly, the French leader has met both President Donald Trump and President Hassan Rouhani independently.
On Tuesday, Macron stated that there was a requirement for “effective action” to lessen the pressures that have flared between US and Iran after a series of incidences. First, the oil tankers were assaulted in the Gulf; then a US drone was shot down and, recently, the Saudi ARAMCO oil facilities were attacked on September 14.
Macron has set out a three-point plan to attempt to de-escalate the tensions between the two sides and hoping to bring about the military clash. The answer depends on adaptability from the two nations.
Macron emphasized that he “never believed” that Trump’s “most extreme sanctions” on Iran were going to yield the outcomes that the US administration needed in the wake of leaving the 2015 atomic deal.
However, trying to bring a mid path between the crisis, he also said that Iran’s ballistic missiles program, not in the deal but must be handled.
“I am not naive, and I don’t believe in supernatural occurrences but instead in the logical endurance to make peace. I trust that the United States, Iran and all signatories of this agreement have that boldness,” Macron stated in his speech at the UN General Assembly.
His proposition includes three noteworthy steps. First, the current atomic deal must be widened to incorporate Iran’s ballistic missiles. Second, there must be a territorial security agreement to secure international route in the Gulf. Third, economic sanctions should be eased. The National reported.
Iran has declared that sanctions must be lifted before it converses with the US. On Tuesday, Trump announced there would be no such quick advances. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who also met Rouhani and Trump separately in the UNGA, stated that Iranian demands are ridiculous.
Moreover, keeping in mind that speculations have spun around whether the Iranian and US president would probably meet or not at the UN, various leaders revealed they had also got engaged in intercession between the US and Iran.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan also told columnists that both Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had requested him to talk with the Iranian authorities.
PM Khan stated that President Trump asked him if he could de-escalate the circumstance and possibly think of another deal.
Despite all the efforts by Emmanuel Macron, so far there is no sign of talks happening between the US and Iran. Moreover, nor will it take place unless Iran and the US both back down from their hard haggling positions and find a middle path.
