Israeli Military Strikes Hamas Targets in Gaza

Sirens sounded in the Sderot area Wednesday night as the Iron Dome intercepted a rocket launched from the Strip, the Israeli army said.

The Israeli military struck Hamas targets early Thursday morning after a rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel overnight, the army said in a statement.

The IDF fire and the reduction of the fishing range came in response to a rocket fired from Gaza toward Israel overnight on Wednesday (Thursday morning). The rocket was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome.

IDF aircraft struck a weapon production site belonging to Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip, the army said, adding that the “terror group Hamas responsible for what occurs in the Gaza Strip and emanates from it, and that it will bear the consequences of actions against Israeli citizens.”

A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel late Wednesday night was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome aerial defense system, according to the army. Sirens sounded in the Sderot area of southern Israel.

Two people received medical treatment at the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, a man suffering from anxiety, and a woman who suffered light injuries while seeking shelter.

The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories announced that in response to the rocket fire, it would reduce the area in which Palestinians in Gaza are allowed to fish. Maj. Gen. Kamil Abu Rokon said in a statement that as of Thursday morning, the zone is now 10 nautical miles until further notice.

An Israeli aircraft struck a Palestinian suspect who approached the Gaza border fence. The Israel Defense Forces said that “an armed terrorist,” was hit in the southern Strip and was later confirmed dead.

In recent weeks, the Israeli army has sought to expedite indirect talks with Hamas in order to reach a long-term ceasefire in the coastal enclave.

Two weeks ago, Israeli aircraft struck Hamas targets, Gaza after three rockets were fired from the Strip toward southern Israel. The rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, the Israeli military said. Earlier that day, rocket alerts sounded in Sderot and other Gaza border communities, and locals reported hearing explosions.

Late last month, Israeli aircraft struck Hamas targets in southern Gaza after rockets were launched at Israel for two days in a row.

In mid-November, Israel assassinated Islamic Jihad commander Baha Abu al-Ata, sparking a round of violence in the coastal enclave. Islamic Jihad fired over 450 rockets at Israeli communities in retaliation. Subsequent Israeli bombardments killed 35 Palestinians.

“The lack of any sort of policy regarding Gaza, meager responses and empty words about a cease-fire, an agreement, containment, and occasional leniency, again and again, bring the citizens of the Gaza border communities to an unfathomable situation. There are no magic solutions, but there are lots to do. For that one needs a good and functional government. Deterrence is brought back by force.”
