Iran civilians are the ones to take to streets as their supreme leader supported a hike in gasoline prices in the country.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader willfully supported the price hike, leaving people dissatisfied, and police resorting to tear gas violence to disperse crowds that had blocked strategic roads in points across Iran. These include Sirjan and Kermanshah.
Khamenei has termed protestors as “hooligans” for damaging property despite the fact there is widespread anger at the increase in oil prices and that Iranians are suffering from the country’s other economic woes.
The White House has given on vehement support to the Iranian civilians, taking to twitter and condemning Iran government for using such lethal arm twisting power tactics to silence the common man, who is not in tandem with the way the government is functioning in Iran.
The rise is an evident result of the fact that the US- Iran trade war aswell where the latter has been heavily sanctioned.
Indeed, Iran’s economy has been battered since May last year when President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from a 2015 nuclear agreement and reimposed crippling sanctions.
Inflation is said to be running at more than 40 percent and the International Monetary Fund expects Iran’s economy to contract by 9.5 percent this year and stagnate in 2020.
The petrol pricing plan was agreed by the High Council of Economic Coordination made up of the president, parliament speaker, and judiciary chief.
Many civilians have been reported wounded and some have also lost their lives in the mass protests that have rocked the country. Strange the supreme leader is not moved by the plight of the common man, at least, at this moment.
