How Sistani Of Iraq Has Warned Iran To ‘Back-Off’

Iraq isn’t interested in holding onto the extended Iranian helping hand. It would rather sleep with the enemy-is a message that is resonating loud and clear as Iraq’s Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani addressed the nation in his key sermon in the holy city of Karbala.

In his Arabic message, he said, “No person or group, no side with a particular view, no regional or international actor may seize the will of the Iraqi people and impose its will on them.”

For anyone who would want to break this down, it literally means that Iraq isn’t interested in being Iran’s guinea pig, which is being served with Iranian proxies for support against civil disobedience which has gripped the nation in the last few weeks.

Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei is known to have unleashed Iran’s proxies in the streets — Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Shiite militias in Iraq — to intimidate the protesters in both nations.

There were airstrikes in peaceful protests. It became clear that Iran was trying to add fuel to a fire that had been simmering due to the mounting pressure of corruption in Iraq. People had lost patience and now demanding tangible change.

Khamenei’s attempt to send his chief negotiator the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps commander Qassem Soleimani to Iraq to meddle with the political scenario and support the lost PM Adel Abdul Mahdi has also not gone well with Populist Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Sadr has demanded Mahdi calls for an early election to save the face of the nation. On his side, he is asking his biggest political rival Hadi Al- Amiri to join him in defeating Mahdi.

Anti Irani slogans are seen echoing the streets of Iraq and Lebanon. No one is happy with Iran’s interference in a volatile political situation where the common man is now involved and wants answers.

For the fact the Sistani is a highly respected figure who has blessed the corrupt politicians and Mahdi alike, at the moment, he is on the protestors’ side.

He isn’t happy with Iran’s interference and Tehran now has to look for ways to save its face.
