Qatar had engaged in dubious PR against its rivals, to be able to win the hosting rights for the forthcoming FIFA 2020 World Cup, various news sources have confirmed.
It is confirmed that Qatar employed a secret ‘black operation’ to indulge in paid PR and had engaged former CIA agents to disseminate ‘fake propaganda’ against rival bidders. This came to light when whistleblowers send off emails to some prominent media agencies, to reveal the corruption behind FIFA World Cup hosting rights.
The main contenders being targeted included the United States and Australia. Relevant documents came in the procession of one prominent English newspaper that also confirmed that these documents had never been unearthed in the (official) investigations led by (US attorney) Michael Garcia. This happened when the book on the insides of Australia’s failed 2022 bid was published by Bonita Mersiades and became yet another whistleblower. There, she mentioned how Qatar had promised a bonus and how the FIFA executives were concerned about the organization’s future funding if, Qatar did not get the bid to host the World Cup in 2020.
Formal investigations did not say anything concretely but helped shuffle a few people instrumental in the bidding going to Qatar’s favor.
Qatar’s strategy was to create an impression of ‘zero tolerance and enthusiasm’ in native countries over the world cup. It employed individuals with experience in creating public influence, paid them and got dubious information floated around the beginning of 2010, to set the map for its own win as the hosting nation.
By doing this, it flaunted the prerequisite stated under the terms and conditions stated by the World Football Governing Body (FIFA) that hosting nation’s population must show enthusiasm, excitement, and willingness to participate in the infrastructural development and other planning towards hosting a world cup.
The rules also prohibited any bidding nation to write and spread malicious or influencing decision based written information of any kind in the media or through social posts. Qatar, yet again, ignored the rule, and employed individuals to do exactly the same and spend huge amounts of money for this. For example, Doha is known to have engaged, in manipulative under the table dealings to influence decision making. What has always gone in its favor is it lucrative monetary gains it offers to officials in the thick-of-things.
According to the media claim a group of American PE teachers had been recruited to ask congressmen to oppose a US World Cup on the grounds the money would be better spent on high school sports. In another negative stunt, American academia was lured with $9000 to write a falsified report that claimed the economic loss of an America World Cup during the week of the vote, and which was published in a major newspaper in the United States.
