The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, sent a message to Turkey, asking for his commitment and compliance with the agreement signed in 2016 on refugees. Michel stressed to the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the borders of Greece are European borders and their protection is an absolute priority. In the context of European solidarity with Greece, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, confirmed EU’s determination to provide absolute support to Greece, to control its borders with Turkey. During her visit in Turkey, the president of the EU commission warned that anyone who tries to test Europe would be punished, describing the land borders between Greece and Turkey as very difficult and complex.
German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, also warned Erdogan that “he must not settle his problems with the European Union on the shoulders of refugees”. According to German newspaper “Sueddeutsche Zeitung” Turkey has opened its borders with the EU to the refugees it has welcomed on its territory, effectively cancelling the 2016 agreement on the control of illegal immigration. According to Merkel, Erdogan currently does not feel sufficiently supported by the EU in Syria and Libya. However, the German chancellor added: “With all possible understanding, I find it completely unacceptable to put the issue on the shoulders of the refugees.”
The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, reaffirmed what Turkey has done to allow immigrants to crowd European borders is a blackmail that Europe cannot accept. Speaking to Italian journalists on Tuesday, Di Maio made it clear that his country’s main objective is to tackle the phenomenon of immigration and avoid conflicts, observing in his speech that Italy is working with the United Nations on the Syrian and Libyan crises.
