A diplomat from Qatar working at his nation’s embassy in London racially abused his driver with terms such as black slave, donkey and dog. It was a campaign of racial and even physical abuse. This was heard at a tribunal.
The diplomat in question is Abdullah Ali Al-Ansari. He is currently working as the head of the medical center at the Qatari embassy. It is alleged that he subjected his former driver to physical and mental abuse over several years. The driver is Mahamoud Ahmed, currently 19, who was employed as the diplomat’s driver as well as the night security offer of the embassy. It has been alleged that the diplomat had treated the driver like a personal slave and kept him on call 24 hours every day of the week.
The proceedings are taking place at the Central London Employment Tribunal. During those proceedings, it was revealed that the diplomat even offered a bribe of £50,000 for dropping the case.
Ahmed is a British citizen with Somali heritage. He was sacked from his job back in 2013. He wanted to take his case to the courts years earlier. However, he could not till a ruling in 2015 by the Court of Appeal. As per the ruling, embassies were stopped from claiming diplomatic immunity if their staff brought legal actions. This landmark ruling enabled Ahmed to continue with the case.
