The fueling war between US and Iran over Iraq is being looked at one major reason why Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi’s went onto to sack the commander of the troops of the Counter-Terrorism Squad (CTS), without giving him any prior notice.
Lt. Gen. Abdulwahab Al-Saadi was shifted to Defence Ministry overnight, leaving many Iraqis angry and taking to social media to vent their frustration and dissatisfaction at this sudden movement. Reports are also coming in that pro- Iranian politicians functioning with Iraq were getting weary of his growing popularity and influence in Iraq and therefore, preferred to have him replaced.
Iraq has been a troubled Arab region, due to both US and Iranian faction forces working inside its territory to get a foothold in Baghdad. Saadi is known to have led in recent years fight against the Islamic State group working alongside the U.S.-led coalition. He has made it clear that he would rather retire than be transferred to the Defense Ministry, which is known to not have much action to its credit, but mere filing sifting and paperwork.
Saad had been placed in the helm of things was the second-in-command of Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service. He has been the overall operation’s commander of Iraqi government forces in Battle of Baiji, Second Battle of Tikrit, and Third Battle of Fallujah, the Hawija offensive in the war against ISIL. His work and sense of discipline and leadership with his soldiers have been repeatedly acknowledged and applauded, something which has not gone in his favor with Mahdi or his senior officer Lt. Gen. Taleb Shaghati.
The CTS was a special combat unit formed by the Americans in Iraq in 2007. It is also been seen that Saadi had close and friendly relations with American counterparts, which have been instrumental in providing training, equipment, and partial funding.
The CTS troops are an elite force in Iraq and have been commanded by Lt. Gen. Taleb Shaghati, who holds dual Iraqi and US citizenship and are known to be one of America’s men in Iraq.
