BBC Faces Investigation from Russian Media Regulator for Conveying Terrorist Ideas

BBC’s Russian language website is being closely examined by Russia’s telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor over BBC breaching Russian law and also for likely quoting terrorist content. The website has been alleged to quote the leader of the Islamic State group.
Communication oversight agency Roskomnadzor stated that it would be checking whether the British public broadcaster willfully violated Russia’s strict anti-extremism laws. It was reported that BBC broadcasted the statements given by IS leader Abu Bakr al- Baghdadi. Abu communicated ideological principles of international terrorist organizations.
The agency stated that they have found documents that announce the ideological attitudes of international terrorist organization. It also stated that at present it is assessing whether the portions followed Russia’s anti-extremism law. On the other hand, in response to the accusation, BBC informed that it strictly followed the Russian laws. It added that as a global broadcaster, it fully abides the rules and regulations of every nation where it functions, including Russia. Hence, they would always offer any details related to their news coverage whenever it is summoned or demanded by the regulator.
Russia follows anti-extremism laws that witnesses say have a big possibility to curb political speech. Thus, Russian news organizations refer to ISIS as an organization which is prohibited in the Russian Federation, a disavowal not used by other foreign media outlets.
In December, Roskomnadzor stated that it would start an investigation into the BBC’s conformity with Russian law after Britain’s media regulator, Ofcom, ordered that state-owned Russian network violated equality rules.
Ofcom stated that the Russian broadcaster was unsuccessful to maintain “due equality” in seven programs that was broadcasted after the former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal was allegedly poisoned.
Roskomnadzor described the action at the time as a tit-for-tat response.
