Baghdad: More than 200 demonstrators shattered into the courtyard of Bahrain’s Embassy in Baghdad and also took down the kingdom’s flag on Thursday night to protest a US-led conference in Bahrain on Israeli-Palestinian serenity.
Police used live rounds to scatter the crowd, police sources told Reuters, without injuries reported.
One protester, who identified himself as a member of the Islamic Opposition Groups, a term generally used by Iranian-backed militias, stated they wanted to send a strong statement.
“We began to take down the Bahraini flag to send a clear communication to all those who participated in the Bahrain conference, that we strongly reject normalizing relations with the Zionist occupiers but will never abandon our assistance of Palestinians,” stated the protester, who identified himself as Abu Murtadha Al Moussawi.
UAE condemns storming of the embassy
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and also International Cooperation ( MoFAIC ) labeled the storming as a blatant violation of diplomatic norms and also conventions, and called on the Iraqi govt to live up to it is responsibility towards international obligations and also conventions which guarantee diplomatic security and also immunity.
“The UAE re-affirms it is categorical support for the Kingdom of Bahrain vis-a-vis all menacing threats to it is security and the safety of it is diplomatic missions,” added the statement.
On his part , UAE Minister of Condition for Foreign Affairs , Anwar Gargash stated : “The attack on the Embassy of the brotherly Kingdom of Bahrain in Baghdad is unacceptable and also reprehensible and a dangerous escalation at the legal and political level , and we call on the Iraqi government to fulfill it is responsibilities and legal obligations to protect diplomatic work along with the mission headquarters in the capital and also Iraqi cities .”
